3,3,4,4-Tetrahalo tetrahydro thiophene 1,1-dioxide is made by chlorination of 3-sulpholene with gaseous chlorine in anhydrous organic solvent at 30 deg. max. until 60-65 kg. chlorine per 100 kg sulpholene has been added. The temp. is then raised to 30-45 deg.C and a soln. contg. 1% catalyst is added, with applicn of vacuum to draw off the HCl formed and excess chlorine. The temp is raised to b.pt and the solvent distilled off under reduced pressure at 60 deg.C. The prod. is centrifuged and washed.
