PURPOSE:To make a special adding circuit, etc., unnecessary by detecting a level in the prescribed timing of a signal outputted from a differential amplifier generating a tracking error signal and also detecting the transporting direction of a magnetic tape at recording. CONSTITUTION:In a timing when a sampling pulse (j) having a phase delayed by one field from a sampling pulse (i), signals d1 and d2 come to high and low levels, respectively. Namely, the output of a sample-holding circuit 12, which is obtained by sample-holding the output of a differential amplifier 8 with the aid of the sampling pulse (j), comes to high and low levels when the transporting directions of the magnetic tape at recording are normal and reverse, respectively. A deciding circuit 11 monitors the level, and discriminates the transporting direction of the magnetic tape at the recording.
