PURPOSE:To improve the operability of a pointing device by providing the pointing device with a means which detects the moving speed on a basis of horizontal-direction pulses and vertical-direction pulses. CONSTITUTION:In the pointing device, an X-direction sensor A outputs pulses X1 and X2 corresponding to the extent of movement in the X direction, and a Y-direction sensor B outputs pulses Y1 and Y2 corresponding to the extent of movement in the Y direction. An X-direction speed detecting part D counts pulses X1 from the X-direction sensor A for a certain time to detect the moving speed in the X direction. A Y-direction speed detecting part E counts pulses Y1 from the Y-direction sensor B for a certain time to detect the moving speed in the Y direction. A mouse moving speed detecting part F outputs moving speed data (m) on a basis of these moving speeds in the X direction and the Y direction. Thus, a cursor is displayed in the designated position.
