PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a germicide, etc. in high yield, by reacting a phenol with sulfur monochloride in a polar solvent by the use of an inorganic bromine or iodine compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A phenol shown by the formula I or formula II (R1-R4 are H, halogen, or 1-4C alkyl) is reacted with sulfur monochloride in a polar solvent (e.g., diethyl ether, dioxane, etc.) to give a polythiobisphenol shown by the formula III (n is 2, or 3) or formula IV. In the reaction, an inorganic bromine (e.g., lithium bromide, etc.) or iodine compound (e.g., iodine, lithium iodide, potassium iodide, etc.) is used as a catalyst. |
