In order to measure the transverse distribution or profile of the longitudinal tension in a web, a run of the web is passed over a web support which changes the direction of run of the web over an angle, the web support being itself supported by support devices which are mutually spaced from each other in the transverse direction of the web. The load arising from the local tension of the web in the transverse direction thereof is sensed by a plurality of pick-ups which are mutually spaced from each other in the transverse direction of the web and which are situated under respective ones of the support devices. The pick-ups generate signals from which the transverse distribution of longitudinal tension of the web is derived. |
