NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R is 1-10C alkyl, alkoxy; X is halogen). EXAMPLE:3-Fluoro-4-cyanophenyl 6-pentylnaphthalene-2-carboxylate. USE:A constituent of liquid crystal compositions: it has large dielectric and optical anisotropy and shows good compatibility with other constituents in combination. PREPARATION:The reaction of naphthalenecarboxylic acid chloride of formula II with 3-halogeno-4-cyanophenol of formula III is carried out in the presence of pyridine to give the compound of formula I. The use of a composition containing the same gives a liquid crystal display elements of low drive voltage.
