The ring (7) is used as a releasable driven member of a silent ratchet. The driving member (9) of the ratchet is fastened to a screwing head (1) of a screwing machine. The clamping elements (10) of the ratchet are held on the screwing head (1). When the ring (7), first of all driven along loosely during the rotation of the screwing head (1), acts on the mating thread (6), its rotation is first of all delayed relative to that of the screwing head (1) by the sliding friction which occurs. The frictional connection of the ratchet is thereby produced, and the ring (7) is then driven along frictionally. After the screwing action, the screwing head (1) is driven in the opposite direction. As a result, the frictional connection is neutralised automatically so that the ring is no longer driven along by the screwing head (1), and the screwing head (1) can be withdrawn from the ring (7) and from the workpiece (2). <IMAGE>
