NEW MATERIAL:The quinolone compound of formula (R is chloro, 1-pyrrolidinyl, piperidino, N-methylbenzylamino, methylamino or dimethylamino) and its salt. EXAMPLE:1-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-3-carboxyl-6-fluoro-7-chloro-4-quino-lone. USE:It has antibacterial activity and is useful as a medicinal drug or animal drug. It inhibits the growth of various kinds of pathogenic bacteria including Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. PREPARATION:The compound of formula can be prepared, e.g. bu dissolving ethyl 2-(2,4-dichloro-5-fluorobenzoyl) 3-(4-hydroxyanilino)-acrylate and potassium carbonate in N,N-dimethylformamide, stirring the solution, pouring the reaction liquid into iced water, separating the produced precipitate by filtration, and drying the precipitate after washing with water.
