In a device for transmitting signal data between a lens and a system camera, a defined radiation is generated in the camera housing and is guided to the lens and from there back to the camera. The lens contains means which vary the radiation in accordance with a manipulated variable of the lens, at least in one of the characteristics of said radiation, and means are provided in the camera housing which evaluate the variations in radiation with regard to the display and/or control of camera functions. Provided as the radiation-varying means is at least one scale in the form of one or more codes of optically readable form, by means of which temporally in variable signal data, can be transmitted between the lens and camera. In addition, the camera-side evaluation means contain further means for passing on the electrical signals derived from the code to a memory assigned to said evaluating means, or directly to the camera electronics.
