PURPOSE:A polyester of excellent melt moldability comprising tetramethylbiph enol units, terephthalic acid, units, hydroxybenzoic acid units and, additionally, diol units at a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:A melt-anisotropic polyester comprising 3,5,3',5'-tetramethyl-4,4'- biphenol units of formula I, diol units of formula II (wherein R is a group of formula III, IV or V, -CH2CH2- or -CH2Ch2CH2CH2-), terephthalic acid units of formula VI and p-hydroxybenzoic acid units of formula VII, wherein said structural units are present at a ratio satisfying the relationships of formulas VIII and IX (wherein k, l, m and n are the molar fractions of the structural units of formulae I, II, IV and IVV, respectively).
