PURPOSE:To make it possible to operate an electric precipitator in such a state that dust collection efficiency is always max., by performing judgment operation to the electric precipitator during operation for a short time and selecting an optimum charge ratio. CONSTITUTION:During a short judgment operation time during operation, the charge system to a discharge electrode and a dust collection electrode is successively changed over between a continuous charge system taking a charge ratio r=1 to a intermittent charge system taking m-kinds of charge ratios rn (wherein n is 1, 2...m and rnnot equal to 1) to perform judgment operation. During this judgment operation, the power consumption element value PW(C) in the continuous charge system and a power consumption element value PW(Irn) at the charge ratio (r) are respectively calculated to operate PW(C).r. As the result of judgment operation, all of m-kinds of power consumption element values PW(Irn) are compared with PW(C).rn and the charge ratio capable of obtaining max. dust collection efficiency is selected to determine the operation method in the next stage.
