PURPOSE:To simplify operation remarkably and speed up character inputting operation by prescribing the kind of character automatically according the sectional area in which a pen point touched first. CONSTITUTION:An area 3 for inputting characters by handwriting and capable of sensing touch of a nib is provided on the tablet face of an input tablet 2. The input tablet 2 has a built-in coordinate detecting circuit constituted of a matrix circuit. The coordinate detecting circuit detects X coordinate (Xo-Xn) and Y coordinate (Yo-Yn) of the pen point positioned contacting in the character writing area 3. Kind of inputted character is prescribed corresponding to the position where the pen point touched first. A CPU7 discriminates the kind of character corresponding to coordinate of the position where the pen point touched first referring to a kind of character conversion table stored in a memory 6.
