PURPOSE:To reduce the electric power consumption of a planar fluorescent illumination light without reducing its illumination luminance by using separate fluorescent screens and separate fluorescent screen electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Separate fluorescent screens 7 are formed on separate electrodes 8. While constantly applying a given voltage to the filament to heat it, time- division pulse voltages (T1-T7) are successively applied across the filament and the fluorescent screen electrode. As the separate planar electrodes successively emit light according to the successively applied voltages, the emissional band moves. A rapid-response liquid crystal display panel having plural separate electrode groups is installed facing a planar fluorescent lamp and the electrode groups are successively driven synchronously with the movement of the emissional band so as to successively illuminate only the controlled display elements used as light bulbs. Accordingly, it is possible to reduce the cross talk among the display electrode groups and also an improved utilization factor is achieved. |
