In a rapid shutdown coupling device, a coupling member 1 has at its upper end an armature plate 11 which in normal operation is held against an electromagnet 8 so compressing a spring 9 and at its lower end is connected by means of locking balls 4 to a drive rod 3 from which a neutron-absorbing control rod 5 is suspended. The coupling member 1 is housed within a guide tube 7 connected at its upper end to a drive mechanism 10 which serves to drive the absorber rod 5 into or out of the reactor core 6. On interruption of the holding current, the spring 9 expands downwardly accelerating the descending coupling member 1 and with it the control rod assembly 3, 5. After a short downward movement, the locking balls 4 are displaced into a recess 72 in the guide tube 7 and the control rod assembly 3, 5 is released. For withdrawing the control rod 5 from the core 6, the guide tube 7 is lowered until the drive rod 3 can return into the coupling member 1 which is then pushed upwards in the guide tube 7 until the armature plate 11 bears against the holding magnet 8. As a result of the bevel of the recess 72 in the guide tube 7 the locking balls 4 again engage within a recess 31 in the drive rod 3, and the member 1 and the rod 3 are locked together once more. After the holding current has been switched on, the control rod 5 can be retracted from the core 6 by the drive mechanism 10. |
