The invention relates to an exhaust gas purification system for an internal combustion engine with a catalytic converter and a bypass line bypassing the catalytic converter. An electromagnetically actuable reversing valve directs the exhaust gases coming from the engine through the catalytic converter when an unleaded fuel is used and through the bypass line when a leaded fuel is used. When the reversing valve directs the exhaust gases through the bypass line, a pilot lamp is continuously lit.
