An obturator avoids a bone cement for fixing in particular the tail of a hip prosthesis penetrating more deeply than is necessary into the medullary canal of the femur. Currently, an obturator is generally made of polythene, remains permanently in the bone and may form an intramedullary plug. The obturator is difficult to remove when a prosthetic operation is resumed. In order to overcome these drawbacks, the obturator according to the invention is made of a rapidly biodegradable material, breaking down within approximately 48 hours, which facilitates early resumption of the prosthesis. The material may be biodegradable in the strict sense of the word, such as gelatine, or capable of being carried by the blood and removed by urinary means, such as polyvinyl alcohol.
