In a process for heat-treating carbonate-containing raw meal, which is preheated in suspension with hot carrier gas, precalcined while passing through a reaction section of a calcining zone, burnt in a burning zone and the burnt material is cooled in a cooling zone, solid fuel and fuel gas being added to the meal for covering the heat requirement of the calcining reaction, difficulties arise due to insufficient calcination when fuels are used which are difficult to ignite or burn out sluggishly. As a remedy, it is suggested that the fuel used is a fuel which is difficult to ignite, in particular has high ignition temperatures and/or burns off sluggishly, and that, in the intake region of the reaction section, the fuel but only a part quantity of the preheated raw meal are charged at a first raw meal-charging point and that, at at least one second raw meal-charging point located downstream of the first raw meal-charging point, at least one further part quantity of raw meal is charged to the reaction section. A plant for carrying out the process has a raw meal-dividing device (16' 17', 18', 21) connected by means of proportioning lines (16'', 17'', 18'', 19'') to raw meal-charging points (16, 17, 18) located on the calciner (7) at intervals in the direction of flow. <IMAGE>
