POSITION DETECTING DEVICE

PURPOSE:To detect the positions of objective bodies in various shapes by selecting a combination of slit patterns obtained by overlapping a detection slit and a fixed slit. CONSTITUTION:A rotary positioning device 25 positions a rotary disk 21 so that a detection unit with a pattern which is suitable for the recognition of the position of the object body 16a and coincident in shape while the object body 16a is considered to be in a section in a detected surface 16 shown by an arrow A is selected among combinations of detection slits 21a-21h and fixed slits 22a and 22b. When the position of the object body 16a is detected, the rotary disk 21 is positioned so that one of combinations of the detection slits 21a-21h and fixed slits 22a and 22b is selected as mentioned above while the object body 16a is considered to be in the section A.
