PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound from a monoalkylbenzene in gaseous phase, in high yield and selectivity, by using a catalyst prepared by treating a specific crystalline aluminosilicate with a gas containing a silicic acid ester, and calcining the treated product in an oxygen-containing gas. CONSTITUTION:A crystalline aluminosilicate having a molar silica/alumina ratio of >=10 and a control index of 1-15, preferably the one exhibiting a difraction pattern shown in the table in X-ray diffraction analysis, is treated with a gas containing a silicic acid ester, and calcined in an oxygen-containing gas to obtain a catalyst. The objective compound, e.g. p-diethylbenzene, etc., useful as a raw material of various functional polymers, can be produced from a monoalkylbenzene having a 1-3C alkyl group, in high selectivity and catalytic activity, in gaseous phase, by using the above catalyst. The X-ray diffraction analysis is carried out by using CuKalpha ray, and taking either of the diffraction peak at 8.7+ or -0.2 or 8.9+ or -0.2 as the base of the relative intensity (100). |
