In a refillable pencil having a propulsion mechanism which consists of a gripper whose outer cone rests, with contact, in a bore, an interchangeable lead cartridge can be introduced which opens automatically. A two-armed lever (21) is inserted within the walls (29) of the lead cartridge (16) and, on insertion into the pencil housing, is pivoted by a lug (23) so that the lead duct (20) is cleared and the leads (15) are fed to the propulsion mechanism. <IMAGE>
