A marine anchor 51, which comprises an anchor fluke 53 having an anchor shank 54 fixed to the fluke to enable the anchor to be joined to an anchor line. A seabed locking plate 63 has additionally been fitted, which is situated behind the rear part of the fluke 53 but above the level of the fluke and which has been provided with a soil passage 65 between the locking plate 63 and the fluke 53. The locking plate 63 and the associated soil passage 65 have been arranged to function in a way which enables the anchor 51 to perform effectively and without adjustment in cohesive soil, such as mud, even though the fluke has been set (for example at an angle of attack θ of 30 degree ) for optimal performance in non-cohesive soil, such as sand, without substantial deterioration from the performance of the anchor in non-cohesive soil (sand). In one embodiment (Fig. 4), the locking plate 63 is set at a negative angle β (up to 90 degree ) in relation to the fluke, whilst in another embodiment (Fig. 7) a positive locking plate angle β, (for example, greater than 90 degree ) is used, but in this case the locking plate 70 lies positioned such that the soil passage 65 delimits a restriction gap. A further embodiment (Fig. 11) offers a new manoeuvring mechanism, which enables the invention to be applied to an anchor having pivoting anchor shanks (Danforth). <IMAGE>
