PURPOSE:Fermentation of a bacterium enables the production of a novel cephem antibiotic which resists to cephalosporinase. CONSTITUTION:A new strain of Xanthomonas lactamgena YK-280 (IFO14330, FERMP-7602), which is positive in gelatin liquefaction activity and oxidase activity, respectively, produces no acids and gases from glucose and mannose and can grow in the presence of 4% sodium chloride, is cultured to collect antibiotics: Tan-592A, B, C, D, E, F. The Tan-592 show antibacterial activities to gram- positive and -negative bacteria with low toxicity to mammarians. Since Tan- 592A, B, and C resist to beta-lactamase, they can be used in treatment for bacterial infections in mammarians. The curative effect of Tan-592B hydrochloride on mouse infections is given in the table. |
