The subject of the invention is a device for optoelectronically detecting and indicating the lateral movement both of the edge of a sheet of paper and the edge of a watermark made in the paper or the edge of a fabric. It comprises a transverse row of optical means such as fibres 5 housed in a case 4 and arranged at the edge of the vicinity of a face of the web of material coming from the roll 1 in order, in this example, to be divided into three webs 3 with the aid of cutters 2. A light source is positioned opposite the row of fibres 5, the web of material being interposed between the source and the aforementioned row so that the centring during the unwinding is detected by occultations or illuminations of the optical means 5. These means transmit to photoelectric cells the light information which is converted thereby into electrical signals transmitted to analyser means, enabling the possibly required corrections to be carried out. Application in particular to the paper and fabric industry. <IMAGE>
