PURPOSE:To realize measurement with high precision of the thickness from the surface of a roll core to the outer periphery of a web regardless of eccentricity of chucking or the roll core by pressing a touch roller against the roll core when the thickness of the roll nearly reaches a predetermined value and using the second detector conneted to said roller. CONSTITUTION:When the first detector (formed by a projector part 16 and a light receiving part 17) which roughly detects the thickness of a roll is provided and thickness of the roll of a web 11 is detected to have nearly reached a predetermined value by the first detector, a touch roller 20 is pressed against a roll core 10. A spot light is projected from the light source 28 of the second detector 26, connected to said touch roller 20, to the surface of the web 11 and a position of incidence of a reflection is detected. Thus, the thickness of the roll for the web 11 is measured with high precision.
