PURPOSE:To obtain a fiber reinforced composite material with high strength and rigidity by forming a formed composite fibrous body contg. a prescribed volume percentage of long fibers held in a prescribed orientation by an aggregate of short fibers, placing the fibrous body in a casting mold, introducing a molten matrix into the mold, and soldifying it under pressure. CONSTITUTION:A formed composite fibrous body contg. a prescribed volume percentage of long fibers held in a prescribed orientation by an aggregate of short fibers is formed. Long fibers of ceramics such as alumina or alumina-silica or carbon fibers are used as the long fibers, and short fibers of alumina, alumina-silica, silicon carbide or the like are used as the short fibers. The fibrous body is placed in a casting mold, and a molten matrix such as molten Al, Mg, Al-Mg or epoxy resin is introduced into the mold and solidified under pressure.
