PURPOSE:To detect automatically and surely original sizes by holding surely sensors to the orginal cover of an electrophotographic copying machine and preventing disengagement of the sensors by opening and closing the original cover. CONSTITUTION:The sensors S1, S2, S3, S4 are provided to the original cover 1 and the sizes B5, A4, B4 and A3 of the originals are sensed by the sensors S1- S4. An elastic layer 2 consisting of polyurethane, etc. and a polyester film 3 are laminated on the cover 1 and the sensor 4 is held by a housing 41 and a holder 23 in the layer 2. The holder 23 is made movable in the housing 41 and is pressed by a spring 52 to hold surely the sensor 4. The original is covered by the original cover 1 and is copied electrophotographically. The sensor 4 is held pressed to the film 3 by the spring 52 and therefore deflection can be absorbed by the spring even in the stage of copying the thick original. The sensor plane and the original plane are thus maintained always constant and the sure detection of whether the original is present or absent is made possible.
