The mechanism for splitting wood logs comprises a drivable endless belt (1). At least one blade (2) is vertically movable above the belt and hydraulically actuated to split a log on the belt whilst this is stopped. - The belt is pref. driven step-wise. The blade may be arranged at an angle, pref. of around 45 deg., relative to the transport direction. Two such blades may be arranged at 90 deg. to one another. The belt may consist of U-section links and may pass over a support (5) below the blade(s).
