PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of cracks of a ferromagnetic thin metallic film during the manufacturing process of a magnetic recording medium and to improve the characteristics of said medium, by performing the heat processing after giving the specific processing to the back side of a substrate opposite to the surface of the ferromagnetic metallic thin film. CONSTITUTION:A ferromagnetic metal is stuck to a substrate to obtain a ferromagnetic thin metallic film. Then a back layer is formed at the other side of the substrate. Such a substrate is driven so as to have a contact between the back layer and the circumferential side of a heat roller. Thus, the heat processing is applied to eliminate curls. In other words, a back layer is formed before the heat processing is applied to the substrate in order to decrease the coefficient of friction less than a ground substrate. Thus the heat shrinkage is facilitated for each part of the substrate. This prevents the generation of cracks to the ferromagnetic metallic thin film. The coefficient of friction of the substrate is also reduced by roughing the surface of the substrate with recesses and projections.
