The invention relates to a spur-wheel gearbox for motor vehicles and the like, the gears of which can be changed stepwise under load by means of a double clutch. The purpose of the invention is, by reducing the synchronisable shifting dogs for shifting the six forward gears, to make a considerable reduction in the outlay involved in manufacture. This is achieved essentially by a novel arrangement of the power flow in the various gears and by a particularly favourable hydraulic control of the synchronisable shifting dogs. In the flywheel of the engine, the spur-wheel gearbox contains a double clutch with an output shaft which is not coaxial with the axis of the flywheel and both ends of which can serve to drive live axles of the vehicle. Considerable advantages are obtained in terms of economy and actuation. To obtain six gears selectable under load and two reverse gears, the number of gear wheels required is the same at that in conventional gearboxes with four forward gears and one reverse gear. All gear wheel pairs are used repeatedly in various gears, thereby optimising the number of gear wheels. The arrangement of an output shaft not coaxial to the crankshaft of the engine makes it possible to assemble the engine, the spur-wheel gearbox and the differential of the live axle in a single block and this is ... for the use of the gearbox in motor vehicles with a front engine and ...
