A process and apparatus for use in wet mill sawing in which a log or cant (flitch) (113) is oriented with its main longitudinal curvature in a horizontal plane on the in-feed table to the gang saw (115) and is sawn around the curve centered on the centre line (117) of the log or cant (113) in double taper sawing to produce boards or deals which can afterwards be straightened in the kiln. Automated detection of the edge (200) of the flat surface of a cant is used to align this edge with a saw blade (205) to ensure the cutting of a full deal. These techniques are optimised for timber production gains over conventional practice. |
