The improved NMR device of the invention comprises a semi-toroidal RF (radio-frequency) coil 10 which produces an alternating magnetic field effective at a certain distance from the poles of the coil allowing NMR measurements to be taken from selected regions inside a living subject such as a human subject. The coil is relatively insensitive to magnetic interference due to metal objects which are behind the coil and can be used both in conventional and superconducting NMR magnets. The coil may be constructed in order to emit little or no excess RF electric field associated with the RF magnetic field in order to avoid any interaction of the parasitic electric field with the sample.
