摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a high-quality metal coating layer suppressing the formation of bubbles in the coating layer, by preheating an optical fiber core under reduced pressure to a temperature nearly equal to or lower than the temperature of the molten metal, passing the preheated fiber through the molten metal, and introducing into a forming die. CONSTITUTION:The core of optical fiber is preheated, and at the same time, the chamber 14 in the casing 13 hermetically covering the core-supplying part is evacuated with the vacuum pump 15. The core 10 passed through the guide roller 16 is introduced into the molten metal 18 in the container 17 maintained under the evacuated state to coat the surface of the core 10 with the metal. The metal-coated core is introduced to the squeezing die 21 via the guide rollers 19, 20 and the outer diameter of the coating layer is determined by removing excess metal from the surface. The core passed through the die is introduced into the winding apparatus 23, and wound around a bobbin, etc. A series of the above operations are carried out under evacuated state since even the winding apparatus is covered hermetically with the casing 13,and the chamber 14' connected to the chamber 14 of the core-supplying part is also evacuated.
