PURPOSE:To improve the gradation by changing the potential distribution around the cathode in response to the luminance level of a video signal. CONSTITUTION:When a voltage V3 to a vertical focus electrode 3 is increased in response to a time extending the pulse width in the pulse width modulation, the potential gradient around a line cathode 2 is increased, the emission electron flow is increased and also the electron beam passing through a slit 10 of the vertical focus electrode 3 is increased and then the luminance is increased. Thus, a gamma characteristic close to a conventional cathode ray tube is provided to the luminance characteristic.
