PURPOSE:To obtain the aimed compound useful as a raw material for resin additives, etc., by reacting isoamylene with a phenol in the presence of an inorganic solid acid or acidic ion exchange resin as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Isoamylene diluted with a hydrocarbon preferably containing no compound of the formula (R<1> and R<2> are 1-6C alkyl; R<3> and R<4> are 1-6C alkyl or H), e.g. a residual hydrogenated 5C fraction after extracting isoprene, is reacted with a phenol in the presence of an inorganic solid acid catalyst or acidic ion exchange resin, preferably the former, particularly a compound oxide such as silica-alumina, zeolite, titania-silica or titania-zirconia, and clay mineral such as activated clay, at 30-120 deg.C under 1-10kg/cm<2> for 1-7hr to give the aimed p-tert-amylphenol and 2,4-di-tert-amylphenol in high selectivity and purity at a low cost with suppressed formation of o-siomers as by-products.
