The excavating tooth comprises an adapter element and a point element. The point element has an earth-engaging edge at one end constituting the tooth forward end. The coupling member includes a nose on one element and a nose-receiving socket on the other element. There are several, cooperating, generally helical threads on the nose and in the socket, whereby the point element is rotated about a longitudinal axis to install it on the adapter. Locks external to the nose releasably connect the elements to prevent reverse rotation of the point element when it is installed on the adpater element.
