PURPOSE:To decrease noise during reading by increasing the capability of recombination performed during forming of a picture in the still mode more than the capability of recombination performed during forming of a picture in the movie mode to improve the picture quality of a still picture. CONSTITUTION:The information formed in each vertical transfer register of a photodetection section 1 is transferred vertically to a storage section 2 during the vertical blanking period and read one by one line sequentially from a horizontal transfer register during the next vertical scanning period. A clock phiAB to recombine excess electric charge on the surface for eliminating the charge is applied to the photodetection section 1 together with a transfer clock phiPI and the clock is controlled by a clock driver CKD. That is, a mode setting circuit MS selects either movie mode or still mode and the frequency of the clock phiAB for recombination is switched based on the selection.
