Transport devices of this kind are required in rolling mills, in tube-manufacturing lines, finishing shops and the like, and in manufacturing workshops where elongated metal material (1) is handled. In order to avoid the unacceptably high level of noise from chain conveyors and conveying roller tables and to configure the spaces (15) between the supports in an arbitrarilly adjustable fashion, it is proposed that at least one longitudinal rail line (5) should extend between the feeding station (3) and the acceptance station (4) on which the items of elongated material (1) should be transportable lying singly or in groups on at least two carriages (6a, 6b and/or 6c, 6d), that the carriages (6a, 6b and/or 6c, 6d) should be moveable by means of flexible traction means (12), that the said traction means (12) should be guided via wheels (10, 11) which are arranged in the direction of movement (13a, 13b) of the carriages (6a, 6b and/or 6c, 6d) downstream of the feeding station (3) and/or downstream of the acceptance station (4) in each case and the axes (10a, 11a) of rotation of which are horizontal, vertical or slanting in each case, and that the spaces (15) between the carriages (6a, 6b and/or 6c, 6d) should be adjustable in accordance with the lengths of elongated material (14), the length of the flexible traction means (12) being kept constant. <IMAGE>
