PURPOSE:To detect positional shift without using a reference mark by setting up an area corresponding to the periphery of a form on a form press by a color can be discriminated from the ground color of the form and measuring the distance between the edge of the form and a reference edge by a positional shift detecting circuit. CONSTITUTION:The form 2 is positioned in a form positioning frame and fixed by pressing a form pressing cover 1. The pressing surface 10 of the cover 1 is constituted of a white part 11 and a black part 12 and the side end edge 21 of the form 2 is positioned on the black part 12. While moving in an arrow (x) direction (sub-scanning direction), a reading sensor executes internal scanning to an arrow (y) direction (main scanning direction) to read out characters 22 on the form 2 optically and store the characters in a picture memory 6. A main scanning clock is counted by a main scanning counter 71. A reference edge detecting circuit 7 detects the reference edge (h) and a white ground detecting circuit 6 detects the initial white ground data corresponding to the form edge 21 and sends a white ground detecting signal to a positional shift detecting circuit 8. The circuit 8 measures the positional shift width of the form 2, and when the width exceeds a prescribed value, generates an alarm or the like.
