By means of this invention, chloride-containing salts, for example sodium chloride and potassium chloride, present in the iron ore are to be removed by thermal treatment. According to the invention, the iron ores are to be treated in an inert or low-oxygen atmosphere, preferably at temperatures between 900 and 1100 DEG C, in a suitable vessel, for example a rotary kiln, fluidised bed or partially closed travelling sintering bed. The oxygen potential in the vessel space can be adjusted by controlled combustion of gaseous, liquid or solid fuels and/or by the addition of carbon to the iron ore mixture.
