937,652. Mixing appliances. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Feb. 10, 1960 [Feb. 16, 1959], No. 5268/59. Class 86. [Also in Group XXVI] A mixer for rubber and other plastic materials comprises a casing 1 having a passageway 3 for the passage of the material during mixing. A rotatable mixing member 2 projects transversely across the passageway 3. The profile of the mixing member 2 conforms closely to the shape of the passageway 3; it may take the form of a helix, as shown, which increases the homogenizing effect by mixing the rubber and particulate material transversely to its direction of flow. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the mixing member is in the form of a ring. The mixing member may also be disposed with its axis at an angle of 60 degrees to 90 degrees to the axis of the passageway. The casing 1 is made in two parts, 1a, lb, which are held together by clamps as at 9 embracing flanges 7. A cooling fluid may be passed through passages 10 in the casing 1; through hollow baffles 10a, placed in the passageway 3 each side of the mixing member; and through the hollow interior of the mixing member 2. Provision is made for gas released by the mixing process to escape through the annular space 47 surrounding the shaft 41, and the vent 48. |
