The invention relates to a novel version of a thermal compressor, which comprises a closed cylinder filled with a compressed gas, a displacement piston oscillating therein periodically, as well as heat exchangers for supplying and removing quantities of heat, and a thermal regenerator. In contrast to the conventional arrangement of the regenerator outside the working cylinder, it is accommodated in the interior of the mobile displacement piston and has the working gas flow through it in an axial direction. The predominantly externally disposed heat exchangers having a constant exchange area are replaced by, in each case, two interlocking rotating parts having a high heat conductance, of which the mobile parts are attached to the end faces of the displacement piston, whereas the fixed exchange surfaces form part of the combustion chamber or the cooler. During each working cycle, the working gas is pressed through the narrow gas gaps between the mobile and the fixed exchange surfaces, which results in an extremely effective heat transfer to the regenerator. Both measures are suitable to achieve high thermodynamic efficiency of the machine.
