971,902. Tube-type heat exchangers for heating feed-water or generating steam. INTERNATIONAL COMBUSTION (HOLDINGS) Ltd. Nov. 24, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959], No. 40454/59. Headings F4A and F4S. In an apparatus for heat exchange between two fluids, one fluid passes from an inlet header 7, through U-tubes 12 to an outlet header 9 (Fig. 1b). Field-type tube elements 15, 16 (see also Fig. 3) for the other fluid extend into one limb portion of each of the tubes 12 and this second fluid flows from an inlet header 26 (Fig. 1a) through connecting tubes 31 to tubes 16 (see Fig. 5) from which it enters tubes 15 in heat exchange with the first fluid. From the tubes 15 the second fluid passes through tubes 28 of relatively large cross-section, and then through tubes 14<SP>1</SP> leading to further field-type tube elements 13, 14 in the other limbs of the tubes 12. After passing first through the inner tubes 14 of these elements and then through their outer tubes 13 in further heat exchange with the first fluid, the second fluid enters the outlet header 24. A casing 11 containing an inert gas surrounds the heat exchange zone of the apparatus. In the application described, hot liquid sodium from a nuclear reactor flows in the tubes 12 and heats feed-water flowing in the tubes 13, 15, &c. Two of the heat exchangers may be interconnected in series, steam being produced in at least the final part of the second heat exchanger. |
