PURPOSE:To enhance the recording density and to obtain a magnetic head, which has not an erase gap to have a simple constitution, inexpensively by providing a write gap and a read gap apart from each other and setting the width of the write gap to a value smaller than an allowable off-track quantity. CONSTITUTION:A write gap 8 is formed in a core 7 around which a coil 6 for write is wound, and a core 10 around which a coil 9 for read is wound is provided back to back with this core 7, and the width of a read gap 11 provided in the core 10 is set to a value smaller than the allowable off-track quantity. The width of data A written on a track -x off the track is reduced to (l0-2x) if data B is written adjacently to this data A +x off the track, and it is necessary that these data are read out without errors by a head +x off the track. Therefore, the write gap width l0 and a read gap width d0 must satisfy relations l0= x+l0/2+d0/2+x, namely, l0=4x+d0. Consequently, when the read gap width d0 is set to a value smaller than the allowable off-track quantity (x), the track pitch is shorter than that of a conventional head, and the recording density is enhanced. |
