PURPOSE:To sharply shorten the rise time of a light output power at the time of restarting the lamp by providing an amalgam enclosure, which has an opening in the luminescent tube, near the electrode and by providing a mercury getter near its opening and the electrode. CONSTITUTION:In an evacuation tube 18 is contained and retained a metallic element 19 which forms amalgam when combined with mercury enclosed in a luminescent tube 8. And near the end opening 21 of a guide tube 20 and a filament 17, a mercury getter 23 is supported by use of a Dumet wire 22. After the light output power reaches its steady state, the mercury vapor pressure within the tube is controlled to the vapor pressure determined by a temperature in the location of the metallic element 19. After being turned off, when the luminescent tube 8 is restarted by applying a source voltage, the mercury getter 23 receives the heat from the filament 17 and quickly raises its temperature, and the adsorbed mercury is rapidly emitted into the luminescent tube. In this way, the rise time required can be shortened. |
