NEW MATERIAL:A squarylium compound shown by the formula I (X is hydroxyl, methoxy, or halogen). USE:Useful as an electron generating substance for a sensitized material of lamnation type. Showing spectral sensitivity of flat photosensitivity in 400-850nm range, exhibiting sufficient spectral sensitivity in the whole light range and a near infrared ray range, usable not only as electrophotographic reproduction but also as a semiconductor laser and an intelligent copier. Besides electrophotographic field, usable as an optical recording medium for laser disc, etc. or applicable as an organic solar cell, etc. PREPARATION:3,4-Dihydroxy-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione shown by the formula II is reacted with an aniline derivative shown by the formula III in a solvent such as n-butanol, etc. at 120-140 deg.C, to give a compound shown by the formula I .
