PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of heating and drying by employing coke lumps of preselected sizes as thermal medium to heat and dry the coal in a shaft furnace which are then separated from the coal by a powder-lump separator in order to recirculate the coke lumps. CONSTITUTION:Over a feeder guide cylinder 3, there arranged are respective ends of a conveyer 5 which discharges the raw material coal 4 for cokes as powdery body to be dried and a shute 6 which supplies coke lumps 7 as lump thermal medium. In a lower center position of a heating chamber 2, a hot gas injector 17 is disposed, and a discharge guide cylinder 9 is connected to its lower part, the lower end of the discharge guide cylinder 9 being met by a powder- lump separator 10. Revolving buckets 6 move up and down from A position to B position where coke lumps 7 are thrown into a hopper 23 which is located over the starting end of the coveyer 8. Since the coke lumps as thermal medium are preselected in size, there is no unbalanced flow of the hot gas in a filler, layer, resulting in the uniform contact between the hot gas and the raw material coal for cokes and in the very large heat transfer ability.
