PURPOSE:To manufacture stably an optical fiber element wire without polluting the environment by blowing a mist of a covering material against an optical fiber drawn continuously with use of a spray nozzle and a ventilating hood arranged on the opposite side. CONSTITUTION:A preform 1 for an optical fiber is softened and melted in a heating furnace 2, and continuously drawn to form an optical fiber 3. A spray nozzle 4 is arranged and directed to the optical fiber 3, and a mist 5 of a covering material is blown against the optical fiber 3. A ventilating hood 8 is simultaneously arranged on the opposite side from said nozzle 4 to suck the mist 5 of the covering material which is not adhered to the optical fiber 3. The mist 5 of the covering material is not scattered into the air, and the environment is not pulluted in this way. And the covering material is stably deposited on the optical fiber 3. The optical fiber 3 coated with the covering material is then sent into a curing furnace 6 wherein the covering material is cured to obtain an optical fiber element wire 7.
