A device for displaying the onset of a crack in a supporting part of a structure or a mechanical component is described, which has one or more optical fibres arranged such that they transmit light emitted from one or more self-luminous light sources to a light-sensitive detector arrangement, e.g. a photoelectric cell. Each optical fibre is connected to the part of the structure or to the component or - if a part of the structure or a component is produced from composite materials - embedded in the component or the part of the structure. A crack which propagates in the direction of the part of the structure or component to which the optical fibre is connected has the effect of rendering the fibre inoperative or only limitedly operative, so that light is no longer transmitted onto the light-sensitive detector device, which is designed such that it then actuates a warning device.
