PURPOSE:To obtain a coagulated latex of a low impurity content, by forming a polymer latex by emulsion-polymerizing a monomer in the presence of a carboxylate emulsifier, precipitating the polymer latex by adding an acid thereto and adding a base and metal salt to the latex. CONSTITUTION:A polymer latex is produced by emulsion-polymerizing a monomer (e.g., styrene) in the presence of an emulsifier in which the hydrophilic group is a carboxalate (e.g., potassium stearate). The polymer latex is precipitated by adding 0.5-50 equivalent in relation to the carboxyl groups of the emulsifier, of an acid (e.g., hydrochloric acid) to the polymer latex. 0.5-5 equivalent of a base (e.g., sodium hydroxide) in relation to the added acid and 0.5-20 equivalent of water-soluble bivalent or trivalent metal salt (e.g., aluminum chloride) in relation to the carboxyl groups of the emulsifier are added successively to the coagulated latex to convert the carboxylic acid in the coagulated latex into an insoluble carboxylate salt.
