PURPOSE:To obtain the titled derivative of a high degree of polymerization, by polymerizing an inorganic acid salt of monoallylamine in the presence of a specified radical polymerization initiator, converting the resulting polyallylamine salt into free polyallylamine and reacting this with an acrylic compound. CONSTITUTION:A polyallylamine salt is obtained by polymerizing an inorganic acid salt of monoallylamine at 30-100 deg.C for 100hr or shorter in a polar medium in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator containing an azo group in the molecule (e.g., 2,2'-diamidinyl-2,2'-azopropane hydrochloride) and precipitating the product by adding a large amount of methanol. This polyallylamine salt is dissolved in water, a strong alkali is added to the solution, and the salt formed as a by-product is separated to obtain polyallylamine. This polyallylamine is reacted with 0.1-200mol% acrylic compound (e.g., acrylonitrile) at 40-50 deg.C for 1-2hr to obtain a polyallylamine derivative.
